BBC Sound of 2016- the short list

Happy new year to all. It’s that time of year again. The shortlist and the winner has been announced for the BBC Sound of 2016.

This is one of those awards that the winner is pretty much guaranteed to have a good year. After all, BBC Sound of 2015 winner was Years and Years who have gone on to have a pretty successful 2015. I must admit I have even grown to like them, although my favourite for that year was and is still James Bay.

So, without further ado let’s start…

Joint 5th – Mura Masa and WSTRN

Joint? Wait did I read that right? Why, yes you did. This year the BBC gave joint 5th to Mura Masa, Electronic Music producer and song writer from Guernsey and WSTRN, an RnB, rap collective straight out of the west side, sorry west London.

Mura Masa otherwise known as 19 year old, Alex Crossan does not actually sing on his debut track, Love Sick f*** but he acts as conductor and clearly runs the show using various instruments and electronic effects.

Personally, the whole electro-techno music is not the sort of thing I enjoy listening to. However, having listened to it a few times I can appreciate the mixing and the use of different instruments rather than just techno sounds really makes his sound stand out from the other electro producers/writers/singers.

WSTRN

BBC Sound of 2016 joint 5th place - WSTRN

I do love to keep up to date with the new music scene but BBC Sound always seems to present bands and artists I haven’t particularly heard of. However, this band I have and it thanks to one of my best friends, Bex who absolutely loves this band.  This type of music is definitely up her street, RnB/rap and I think it may actually be growing on me. They have already had the honour of performing their debut track, In2 on TOTP on New years day this year. So, although they only came 5th on this list they have already created quite a big following and can already be found on the music channels as I found last weekend.

4. Blossoms

 

BBC Sound of 2016 4th place - Blossoms

I read their info before I listened to their song. Blossoms’ label themselves as a Psych-Pop riffs band from Stockport. Yes, I was as confused as you may be right now. But then I read on and my interest was heightened. Among their inspirations and influences they list the classics such as the Beatles, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys and ABBA. No that wasn’t a typo they really did say ABBA which I think is pretty ballsy for a band just starting out.

They have already performed at the SXSW festival in America and their debut song, Blown rose is an interesting mix of 90s Brit-pop and noughties indie.

3. Nao

BBC Sound of 2016 3rd place - Nao

This is the reason why BBC Sound is a great concept, because it finds unique, fresh talent such as this one. Nao is not the sort of singer you can peg one label onto; some have called her neo-soul others alternative RnB and I would agree with all of them.

Another Londoner on the BBC Sound list, Nao studied at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Having already won a MOBO for best newcomer and performed at Glastonbury last year she is alerady on the right track.

Nao is bursting with feminine attitude at its best; no revealing clothes or raunchy dancing. She is definitely a breath of fresh air in a polluted pop world of Miley Cyrus’ and Rihannas. Definitely one to watch in 2016!

2. Alessia Cara

BBC Sound of 2016s runner up - Alessia Cara

This year’s BBC Sound is full of female talent and here is another one. Canadian singer/songwriter, Alessia Cara can already boast a famous fan base including Drake and Alicia Keys. In fact, Taylor Swift became such a fan after hearing Alessia’s cover of Bad Blood she invited her to perform with her on the 1989 tour.

So, having already grabbed the attention of big names at only 19 years old, Alessia is going from strength to strength.  With the attitude of Lorde, looks similar to Eliza Doolittle and impressive rapping skills she will be a good one to watch this year.

So…. that only leaves us with the number 1 spot for BBC Sound of 2016. Following in the footsteps of Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, Adele and Mika to name a few, this artist is already pitted for great things. The winner of BBC Sound of 2016 is….

1.Jack Garratt

BBC Sound of 2016 winner - Jack Garratt

24 year old Jack Garratt is from a small town in Buckinghamshire and is no stranger to the music industry. He has been posting music online since 2009. He has already written and released several EPs and his debut album, Phase is due to be release next month through Island Records.

Like most BBC Sound winners he is being awarded the BRIT awards critic choice for 2016.Not only this, but he also won the MTV award for Brand New for 2016.

Considering it is only January and he has already won 3 awards, quoting Otis Clay, the only way is up for this singer-songwriter. I am sure we will be hearing a lot more of him during 2016 and for years to come.
