BBC Sound of 2016- the short list

Happy new year to all. It’s that time of year again. The shortlist and the winner has been announced for the BBC Sound of 2016.

This is one of those awards that the winner is pretty much guaranteed to have a good year. After all, BBC Sound of 2015 winner was Years and Years who have gone on to have a pretty successful 2015. I must admit I have even grown to like them, although my favourite for that year was and is still James Bay.

So, without further ado let’s start…

A very late happy new year to you all. Firstly a MASSIVE apology that there has been such a delay since the last post, I have had a lot going on. But, more importantly I am back and 2015 is going to be much better for this blog.

As is tradition my first post of the new year is a review of BBC Sound of 2015 top 5. Last year’s winner, Sam Smith, as predicted has become quite the sensation and I am happy to see that my favourite, George Ezra has had his fair share of success in 2014.  If you want to see my review of last year’s BBC Sound click here.

So without further ado here is 2015’s top 5 of up and coming music, enjoy!

Freshfields is coming!!

This is a great local festival held each year in New Milton and it has expanded so much in the last few years.

I last went to this festival a few years ago when it was a one day event, there was a scattering of stalls and just a few stages.

However, this year it is running for two days and has 4 stages, including the ska stage, all mixed up, blues stage and the main “bigger boat” stage.

Previous acts have included the Brit nominated artist, Rumer and this year the line up is just as exciting.

Acts confirmed include: Crescendi, Fearne and previously reviewed Lonely Dakota ( previously known as 6 minutes to sunrise) as well as many other local acts.

This is set to be a fantastic weekend and with a weekend ticket including camping only costing £35 it is sure to be a packed out event.

Takedown Festival, March 15th 2014 @ Southampton University

01ed019aa15b08682886277a51312b8c11317356c3Before I go any further, I will admit, I am not the biggest rock fan. As you may be able to tell from my blog, the main genres I enjoy listening to are acoustic, pop and indie. But, that’s not to say I don’t enjoy listening to rock music sometimes. So, takedown for me was not only a music festival but a further insight into the world of rock and metal, and wow was it music overload but for all the right reasons.

BBC Sound of 2014 – Top 5!!!

I was inspired to do this blog post after reading my friend, Mr Brawny’s post on  his blog (Brawny: Life, thoughts and drunken ramblings) about  the nominees at the Brit awards. So I thought I would do one for BBC Sound of 2014 as this very much applies to my blog.

By the way his blog is very good so once you have read mine you should definitely go have a read.

It’s that time of year again, a short time ago BBC announced their Top 5 for BBC Sound of 2014, including their winner. This is quite an influential list because previous winners have often gone on to become pretty big. Previous champions include; Little Boots, Ellie Goulding and Jessie J. So, this is quite a good indicator of finding out who we are going to be hearing more of in 2014.

BAKER

I kept thinking over and over who does this artist sound like, what styles has he adopted? The thing is, BAKER is quite a rarity in the music industry at the moment. There is nothing generic about this artist and he seems to have put a spin on the dance genre to make it infectious yet enjoyable. He is stylish, he has a contemporary edge to him but at the same time there is a subtle undertone of something perhaps vintage in his music and looks.

One thing is for sure, his songs are very catchy and for all the right reasons, they have a good solid back beat, he makes you want to get up and dance to and they are perfect to cheer you up on a miserable rainy day.

Band of Skulls

If you are looking for a new indie/rock band, look no further. From the first  track I listened to of theirs I knew I was listening to a good band with a lot of potential. Plus, they are also from Southampton so they are also local talent for me which is always a bonus.

They have recently released a new album called  Sweet Sour but I would definitely reccomend you start with their début album Baby Darling Doll Face Honey as it is a brilliant mix of indie and rock beats from the catchy lyrics of Death by Diamonds and Pearls to the upbeat melody of Light of the Morning; you will not be disappointed!!

This band is set to breakthrough the music industry having already featured on Radio 1 as Fearne Cotton’s track of the week as well as having slots at this year’s Isle of Wight festival and Reading festival.

You will be sure to hear more from this band very soon, once they get back from their european tour they are currently on. Keep up to date with the band’s tour and music here.

Here is a favourite track of mine of their second album and their most recent single, Devil takes care of his own:

Johnny Flynn

If you think folk music is boring and only for members of green peace then think again!

28 year old Johnny Flynn (also known as Joe Flynn) is a unique talent who takes folk music to another level. Amongst his claims to fame he can include; appearing in Lisa Mitchell’s ‘Coin Laundry’ video as well as performing a duet with Brit award winner, Laura Marling in his most recent single “The Water”

His debut album, “A larum” is full of beautifully written lyrics and so many emotions, and his second album “Been Listening” continues this and does not fail to disappoint.

Personally I am not into that many folk bands but Johnny Flynn is a brilliant example of a modern day folk singer. After seeing Johnny Flynn and his band the Sussex Wit at last year’s Festibelly in Lymington and if you get the chance to see him live you will not be dissapointed!

Check out one of his brilliant songs, The Box below:

Sunrise Avenue

I don’t actually know why I have not written about this band before. I was introduced to Sunrise Avenue’s music by a good friend of mine from the Czech Republic.

Following in the footsteps of bands such as The Rasmus and Him, Sunrise Avenue also originate from Helsinki, Finland, and although have not reached the UK just yet have made a big impression in other European countries.

The first song I heard of theirs was their hit track “Fairytale gone bad” which is a great pop/rock song about a guy telling the story of an ended love and singing “tell them it’s me that made you sad, tell them the fairytale gone bad” (fact: this song was chosen as the official theme song for the 2006 Tour de France.)

They describe themselves as 70% rock and 80% pop and have taken the likes of Germany, Austria and Finland by storm with their debut album “On the way to Wonderland” which sold more than 400,000 copies. Now they are about to take on Europe once more on their acoustic tour, promoting their latest album, “Popgasm.” They have not got any UK dates but if you are around Finland, Germany, Austria or Czech watch out for the guys!

For more information on the band click here or check out their hit song, “fairytale gone bad” below:

Also, check out one of their new songs of the latest albums, “Welcome to my life” which is an emotion filled ballad with a particularly moving video.
